Lake Michigan lies a few miles west of Coloma charter township, close enough that a northwest wind can bury the place while country an hour inland stays dry. Swans Plowing works those nights — plowing driveways and lots, clearing walkways, and salting the ice that follows when an afternoon sun makes a little water. Lake-effect does not come once and quit; it arrives in bands, again and again, so the route gets run and rerun until the wind finally swings. The good moment is a driveway down to blacktop with the snow stacked well out of the way and room left for more. Around here, there is always more.
