West of Coleman the fields open up and there is nothing out there to slow the wind, so a January driveway can fill back in an hour after it was cleared. Local Labor takes on both ends of that year — plowing drives and lots, clearing walks down to the surface, treating the ice that forms where meltwater runs across concrete; then, once the ground dries out, mowing, trimming, edging and hauling off the spring and fall cleanups. Out here the seasons are extreme in opposite directions and neither one waits for anybody. The good part is being the reason a place stays usable: passable in the dark of winter, mowed and squared in the middle of summer. Coleman and the Midland County roads that run out from it keep both jobs busy.
