The ground in Clinton Township is old lakebed — flat, patient clay that the Clinton River still wanders across on its slow way east toward Lake St. Clair. Warner Landscape & Sod works that ground, mowing and edging and trimming yards from the side streets off Cass Avenue out to the newer subdivisions bordering Macomb Township. On a June morning the dew sits heavy here, and the first pass of the day leaves a dark stripe down a lawn you can read from the porch steps. There is a plain satisfaction in a straight edge along a driveway, in a yard that looks tended before the neighborhood is fully awake. Come October the cleanups follow the maples, when the whole township turns gold at once and the rakes go out. The work is simple and it is visible, which is the good part.
