There is a certain afternoon in a Lake County January when the sun goes low and gold across the snow and the whole township looks like it has been left out to rest. It never lasts — the next system drops out of the northwest and the roads west of Reed City fill in again overnight. Shoemaker Excavating takes on the plowing around Chase: drives and lots cleared, walkways opened, salt down on the slick ground by the steps. What makes it worth doing is the shape of a finished job — a wide, square turnaround, snow put where it will not slide back, room to swing a truck out without thinking about it.
