Chase sits out in Lake County's sand and jack pine, strung along the old rail line where the country opens up between stands of timber. Winter here is long and dry-cold, and the snow that comes stays put, packing into two-tracks and driveways until somebody moves it. Libey Excavating runs the snow side: plowing drives and lots, clearing walks, and salting where the ice glazes over. A long north-country driveway opened all the way to the road, the banks pushed back where they belong, is a genuinely good thing to see in the headlights. Then it is on to the next one, and the sky starts to go grey behind the pines.
