February, ten at night, headlights swinging off the I-69 ramps into a Charlotte that has gone white and soundless. H & L Outdoor Services LLC is plowing then, and shoveling the walks the plow cannot reach, so the morning starts on bare pavement. Five months later the same crew is out at noon under a flat mid-Michigan sun, mowing, trimming and edging while the heat comes up off the driveways.
