At four in the morning in January, the lamps around the Eaton County courthouse square light up a town that is entirely snow and entirely quiet. Eric Rogers LLC is out in it, plowing drives and clearing walks so that the first car of the day backs out onto pavement instead of a foot of drifted white. Come June the same streets need mowing, trimming and edging, and the truck trades its blade for a mower deck without much ceremony. Two halves of one year, both of them about a place looking looked-after when people step outside. Charlotte is home ground, with Potterville, Olivet and Eaton Rapids close by.
