Cedarville looks out on the Les Cheneaux Islands, a scatter of green in the north channel of Lake Huron, cedar and rock and water clear enough to count stones off the end of a dock. The growing season up here is short and bright, and Green Thumb Lawn & Garden Center makes the most of every week of it — mowing, trimming, edging, cleanup as soon as the frost releases the ground and again before the first hard freeze. Lawns among the cedars ask for patience: thin soil, cool nights, and a July that finally turns everything deep green all at once. There is real pleasure in a cut lawn set against that blue channel, boats sliding past, the light holding on well after nine. Around Cedarville and Hessel, that is the summer's work.
