Four in the morning in Caledonia, and the band that came in off Lake Michigan overnight has laid another few inches down the gravel section roads. BVD Outdoor Services is out in it, headlights swinging across the field edges southeast of Grand Rapids, opening driveways one pass at a time so the first cars of the day roll out onto bare pavement. Walks get pushed down to the concrete and treated at the step, where ice always tries to hide. Come summer the same trucks trade the blade for the deck, and these yards get mowed, edged and trimmed on a rhythm you could set a clock by. It is plain work, done early, and the reward is a drive that looks like nobody ever had to fight for it.
