The Shiawassee River makes its slow turn through Byron beneath the old mill dam, and the village follows the water in a handful of blocks. Royalty Services works both halves of the year there: plowing and shoveling when winter shuts the streets down to two lanes of white, mowing and trimming when the riverbank greens up again. Winter mornings start early, with drives opened, walks cleared, and salt laid where the ice sets up along the north sides of things.
