Southwest of Byron Center the subdivisions thin out into orchard rows, blueberry fields and long straight farm roads running toward Dorr and Moline. Timmer Lawn & Snow works that quieter edge of the township as well as the village itself — mowing, string trimming and edging in season, then plowing, shoveling and salting once the first inch sticks. Country drives are long and open, and snow crossing a bare field will fill one in twice before sunrise; village drives are tight and want a lighter hand. Both get cleared, both get finished. A yard out here is judged by whether it looks tended from the road, and that's a fair test.
