Most of what makes a Byron Center lawn look right happens below the mower deck, down in the sandy loam the glaciers left across Kent County. This is a lawn care business working the yards of the village and the township around it — mowing, trimming, edging, and the cleanups that bookend a Michigan growing season. In late May, when the bottomland near Rush Creek is still holding water and the maples finally fill in, a yard shows exactly how it was treated the year before. The work is patient: even passes, a clean line at the walk, clippings carried off so the turf can breathe. By June the whole lawn reads as one green sheet, and that is the point.
