Four in the morning on West Road, salt trucks not out yet, a plow blade throwing a curl of white into the dark, and that is DJ's Property Maintenance in January. Snow crosses this flat Downriver ground on a wind that has come over open water, and it drifts wherever it likes, so drives and lots get opened early and then checked again. By April the plow gear gives way to mowers and the year turns to lawn care, cutting, trimming and edging, keeping ahead of grass that thickens fast in Brownstown's heavy soil. Two very different jobs, one idea behind both, which is that a person ought to be able to leave the house without thinking about it. The work runs throughout Brownstown Township and the neighboring Downriver communities.
