Winter in Brownstown Township does not sneak up on anybody; it comes across Lake Erie with the wind behind it and lands on ground with nothing to break it. Dan K's Inc. is a snow removal outfit built for exactly that, plowing driveways and lots, opening walks, pushing back the drifts that pile against every north-facing thing in the township. The hours are unsociable and most of the work happens in the dark, which is rather the point, because by the time headlights come down Sibley Road and King Road the pavement is black and open. There is a real pride in that quiet handoff, in a lot that looks like the storm simply skipped it. Brownstown and the Downriver towns around it make up the range.
