On a December morning the roads around the lakes near Island Lake are all blue shadow and salt haze, and the work starts long before the first commuter reaches US-23. Local Landscape clears snow from driveways, lots and walks across Brighton Township through those months, then turns to mowing and trimming once the oaks come back and the grass starts pushing. Between the hills and the water this township never quite gets one uniform kind of weather, so routes get run by what is actually on the ground. A drive opened before dawn is a small thing that changes an entire day. Then July arrives, and the same properties get their lines cut straight and their edges kept sharp.
