Out past the last cluster of houses the township simply opens — flat country, big sky, hedgerows and the odd stand of oak marking where the old prairie once ran. Lawns here have room to be generous, an acre or more of green running out toward a field line, and keeping one looking right is a question of scale as much as care. Mow wide, trim everything the deck cannot reach, cut the border along the drive so the shape of the property reads clearly from a quarter mile off. In open country a well-kept lawn is visible a long way, which is reason enough to keep the lines straight. There is no hurry in it, only the habit of treating each yard the same way every week.
