In July the drawbridge in Charlevoix lifts on the hour and the whole street pauses while a mast slides through toward Round Lake. Charlevoix Landscape Inc works both sides of that pause — the lake road, the ferry crossing at Ironton, the yards around Boyne City — mowing, trimming and keeping beds clean through the busiest weeks of the year. Summer up here is short and crowded, so a lawn has to look right on a schedule rather than eventually. Autumn hands over the cleanups, and then that long clear October light comes off the water. The pride is in arriving, doing it properly, and leaving behind no sign but the finish.
