About Siler's Stump Grinding

The Boardman River starts up here in sand and jack pine, in country cut by two-tracks and quiet most of the year. Siler's Stump Grinding covers those back roads and the yards carved out of the pines around Boardman Township. Tree removal comes first when a pine has gone red at the top, then tree trimming for the limbs hanging over a camp roof, and then the grinder puts the stump under the ground where it belongs. Sand chews on teeth, so the work goes slow and deliberate and finishes with the chips spread and the ground swept level. What is left is open ground with pine shadow moving across it, and no reminder that anything was ever in the way.
