Danes Dirt Works

About Danes Dirt Works

January mornings along the Boardman River headwaters come in at ten below, steam standing over the open water and the jack pines carrying a load of new snow. Danes Dirt Works is out in it early, plowing driveways in Boardman Township down to a firm surface and pushing the piles where they will not creep back across the tracks by afternoon. Walkways and steps get cleared and salted, because in Kalkaska County it is the ice under fresh powder that puts people down. Long two-track drives back into the trees are their own problem, and they get opened all the way to the road. There is real pleasure in leaving a place plowed square, knowing whoever is inside can just start the truck and go.
