About Smitty's Tree & Snow Removal

Snow comes to Benzonia off Lake Michigan in long grey bands, and it does not ask what the forecast said. Smitty's Tree & Snow Removal is out in the middle of it — plowing drives, opening the turnaround, clearing walks and steps so people up on the ridge above the Betsie valley can actually get down to the road. On nights when a band parks itself over Benzie County, the job becomes a matter of going back around, and around again. Headlights, falling flakes, the scrape of the blade, then a driveway lying clean and black behind you. Waking up to that is the whole reason the truck was rolling at four.
