Winter in Benton Harbor is written by the lake. A northwest wind crosses forty miles of open water, picks up everything it can carry, and unloads it along the Berrien County shore in bands that can last all night. Ken's Lawn and Snow runs against that: plowing driveways and parking lots, clearing sidewalks and walkways down to the pavement, and salting the spots that glaze over first. The work happens in the dark, in the hours when the city is asleep and the plow lights are the only ones moving. Then morning comes, and everybody backs out onto clean concrete as though the storm had been somebody else's problem.
