Downtown Bay City at midnight in January is bridge lights on black water and not much else moving. French & Sons is out in it — plowing drives and lots, opening sidewalks and entrances, salting where the melt runs and refreezes before dawn. Working while a town sleeps has its own kind of quiet, the plow light swinging across storefronts and empty crossings. By the time the first headlights come down the street, the pavement is already dark and wet. Nobody sees the night; everybody sees the morning.
