There is an hour, somewhere around three in the morning, when Battle Creek is nothing but snow and sodium light and the plows have the roads entirely to themselves. John Lahusky's TLC works that hour — driveways opened end to end, walkways shoveled down to the concrete, ice melt spread where shade keeps a patch slick all day long. Calhoun County winters come in every version there is: dry powder off the lake, heavy wet inches in February, freezing drizzle that turns a flat drive into a hazard by breakfast. The point of all of it is that somebody's car gets out at six-thirty without a shovel in the trunk. That is the entire job, done over and over until April says otherwise.
