Out in Bark River Township the roads run between cedar swamp and hayfield, with the Hiawatha's woods standing dark along the far edge of things. EDI keeps lawns cut through the northern growing season, mowing and trimming yards that sit wide open to the sky, where a mower's lines can be read from the county road. Up here the green comes late and leaves early and everything in between happens quickly, so you stay ahead of it or you don't. The finish is what shows: grass even, trimming tight around posts and stone, clippings off the walk. Each end of the growing season brings a clearing pass, the ground opened in spring and the yards emptied of leaves before the first hard freeze.
