Between Bangor and Hartford the orchards and vineyards run in tidy rows, and by October the whole countryside smells like apples and wet leaves. Cleanup season is the busiest stretch of the year — beds cleared, leaves gathered and carried off, lawns given a last cut before the ground goes hard. Winter turns those same driveways into a plow route, with steps and paths cleared by hand and salt down where shade holds ice past noon. By late April it is mowing again, edges cut sharp, string trimmer taken around every post and tree. Clearing what needs clearing and hauling off what needs hauling is most of what keeps a place in order.
