About Grounds to Gardens
For two weeks each June the peonies in Nichols Arboretum draw half the town up the hill, and afterward every yard in Ann Arbor seems to be trying to keep up. Grounds to Gardens works the lawns underneath all that flowering — mowing on a steady weekly rhythm, trimming around beds and tree trunks, edging so the turf stops exactly where it was meant to. The soil in this town runs from river-bottom loam to glacial sand within a few blocks, and grass behaves accordingly, so the cut answers to the ground rather than the calendar. Cleanups in spring and autumn carry off whatever each season lets fall. A tended lawn is the frame; it makes everything planted inside it look intentional.
