Packard Road on a Wednesday afternoon is Ann Arbor at its most ordinary and most itself — porches, bikes tipped over on the walk, a ballfield backstop rising over the rooftops at Buhr. C & S mows through that stretch week after week, trimming around mailbox posts and swing sets, edging where the driveway meets turf, clearing off whatever the cut leaves behind. Come December the same route runs again in the dark, plow down, walks opened, salt at the steps. Repetition is the whole trick of it; a neighborhood looks kept because somebody kept turning up. Both services, one street at a time, all the way around the year.
