Alaiedon Township is drawn in straight lines: section roads ruled a mile apart, corn rows aimed at the horizon southeast of Lansing. Hedgemaster Mowing & Topiary works in the shapes those lines leave room for — a boxwood rounded true, a privet run squared off, a yew given a silhouette that reads from the road. The mowing comes first, wheel lines laid down even across the yard and the edges cut sharp along the walk. Then the shears, and the slow circling that tells you when a hedge is finally level. Late in the day the shadow off a clipped corner falls as clean as the fence behind it, and the whole place looks like somebody meant it.
