In May the alewives run up Nequasset Brook in a silver crowd, and Woolwich takes it as the official word that the season has opened. Landcrafters starts then too: mowing, trimming, edging, mulch, and a spring clearing that pulls the winter's sand and litter off the grass. The other half of the calendar turns cold, and the same properties get plowed, shoveled and sanded storm after storm until mud season takes over again. Handling a place both ways builds a kind of memory for it — where the ledge lies, where water sits after a rain, which corner drifts shut first. The result is a property that never looks abandoned in either direction.
