When Annabessacook Lake lets go of its ice, Winthrop dooryards come out of the thaw looking rough — matted grass, road sand thrown up along the edges, branches down against the fence. That thaw starts the year for Kennebec Maintenance & Tree Service: cleanup first, then mowing on a regular turn, trimming and edging, mulch in the beds, seed where the lawn came through thin. By the second or third cut a yard that looked ruined in April is holding a deep, even green, and nobody remembers what it looked like at ice-out. The season closes the way it opened, with rakes and a thorough fall clearing that leaves the ground bare before the first hard freeze. In between, it's steady, weekly, unhurried attention.
