When Saccarappa Falls freezes at the edges and the mill lights double themselves in the black water, Westbrook is deep into its plowing season. Les Wilson & Sons runs the hills and side streets in the dark — plowing driveways and lots, cutting back the banks the road plows throw across the aprons, opening walks down to pavement. Salt and sand go on the steep spots, the ones that send a car sideways on a January morning. In a river town the storms often come in wet and turn to ice by four a.m., which means going back out again. Driving home at daylight past a street of open driveways is its own kind of reward.
