Out toward Foster Point the land runs low and the water gets in everywhere, so a West Bath winter is really one long argument between salt and freeze. Mid-Coast Excavation, Inc. takes that argument seriously — plowing while the storm is still coming down rather than waiting for it to finish, then coming back at dusk to widen the banks before the next one stacks on top. Walks and steps get cleared to the surface, lots opened corner to corner, traction put down where the wind has polished a driveway to glass. There is a good feeling in the last pass of the evening, the whole yard laid out square under the pole light. Come morning nobody has to think about it, which is exactly how it should feel.
