In Van Buren the St. John River is the northern edge of everything, and on a July night the light hangs on past nine over potato fields rolling away south. CMowing works those long evenings — mowing lawns along the river road and up through town, trimming in around the steps and the clothesline post, edging the walks. This far north the growing season is short and generous, all of it packed into a few green months, so nothing waits on anything. Spring cleanups get yards open early; fall cleanups close them before the ground goes to iron. A crisp, level lawn under that late Aroostook light earns the hurry.
