Thomaston's Main Street holds a row of square Federal houses built by men who made their money on the water, and on a January night snow stacks up on every granite step. J. K. Kalloch is out before the streetlights quit, plowing driveways and dooryards from the village toward the St. George River and shoveling walkways down to bare pavement. Coastal storms here come in wet and heavy, then turn to glaze by four in the afternoon, so the work is about timing as much as steel. Sanding the cleared surface is the last pass, the one that decides whether a morning goes easy. A driveway squared off at the corners while the rest of town is still asleep is a good thing to leave behind.
