Winter arrives in Surry off the water first — a dark line over Contention Cove, then six inches on Route 172 by morning. Mc Donald & Sons runs the plow through it, opening driveways and turnarounds while the sky is still the color of slate, so nobody has to guess whether they can get to work. Come May the trucks give way to mowers, and the warm half of the calendar becomes mowing, trimming and cleanups around Toddy Pond and the village roads. Two trades, one year: clear the snow, then cut the grass. The reward in both is the same — a place that looks cared for, and a driveway you can back out of without a second thought.
