Spring is slow to commit on this stretch of the Penobscot — mud still in the driveways at Sandy Point while inland towns are already green. Maine Coast Lawns starts the season anyway, raking out winter sand, clearing lawn edges and beds, then settling into weekly mowing, trimming and edging through the summer. Coastal yards run to moss and ledge and thin topsoil, so the first cuts stay high and the grass is given room to catch up. By the Fourth of July the lawns along the Route 1 rise are thick enough to hold a stripe end to end. Then it is leaves in October, and the whole shoreline goes quiet again.
