When the December wind comes across Sebago Lake, it drives the snow into Standish sideways and fast, filling in the roads from Standish Corner to Steep Falls. An excavating outfit knows how to move earth; when winter arrives, Morrell's Excavating moves snow instead, opening up driveways and pushing the storm's leavings well out of the way. When the first school buses roll down Route 25, a driveway already dug out means the day can start on time. The satisfying part is a wide, square opening at the end of the driveway, right where the town plow's ridge of frozen slush used to be. The lake will freeze over soon enough; the path out of the yard does not have to.
