In Steep Falls the Saco makes its noise all year — loud with meltwater in April, muffled to a whisper under shelf ice by January. Maine Outdoor Spaces works the whole span of that sound: mowing, trimming and cleanups through the green months, then plowing, shoveling and sanding once the village road goes hard and white. Standish's western corner is a country of river flats and steep little pitches, and both make for interesting ground to keep. The reward is simple and physical — a lawn squared away by noon, a dooryard opened wide enough to swing a truck around in at five in the morning. That is the shape of the year out here, and it suits the work.
