Long Lake lies below the village and the potato ground rolls away from it, and by December the whole St. John Valley is one clean white sheet with a dark line of woods at the edge. Babin Construction plows through an Aroostook winter that starts early and refuses to let go — driveways opened, walks and steps cleared, banks knocked back once they stand taller than the truck. Dark comes on at four up here, so most of the work happens under headlights with the exhaust hanging in still air. In this county nobody treats snow as an event; it's simply the season, and it gets handled. A driveway open before the school bus comes down the road is what a good morning looks like.
