By November the harbor at Southwest Harbor has emptied out — boats hauled, the summer road gone quiet, Somes Sound turned the color of slate. That is when Doug Gott & Sons goes to work, plowing driveways along Clark Point and the roads running up toward Echo Lake, pushing snow back off dooryards, clearing walks so the steps are safe in the early dark. A nor'easter comes up the Gulf of Maine and lands on this island with everything it has, and afterward somebody has to open the way out. Winter is long here and the mountains hold the cold, but a driveway scraped clean to the gravel is what makes an ordinary morning possible. Snow removal on Mount Desert Island.
