About Spiritual Workers in a Physical World, Inc.

At three in the morning in Ferry Village the storm is still coming, and the only things moving are the light out on Spring Point Ledge and a set of amber flashers turning the falling snow orange. Spiritual Workers in a Physical World, Inc. is out in those hours, opening South Portland driveways and clearing walks and steps so that when the day begins, it can simply begin. The work is unglamorous and repetitive — push, back up, push again, then take the last four feet by hand. By sunrise the streets are white and the driveways are black, and that difference is the entire point. Snow removal, in the dark, for a city that has to be somewhere by eight.
