Fog comes up off Willard Beach and lies in the side streets until the sun burns through it, and that is usually when the mowers start. Collins & Sons Landscaping works the yards of South Portland — the deep lots off Preble Street, the small green squares behind Willard Square — cutting the grass level and running the edge along each walk until the line reads sharp from the road. Come December those same streets go blue an hour before daylight, and the work turns to plows and shovels: driveways opened so a car can back out without touching a bank, steps cleared down to the tread.
