The Great Works River comes down through the old mill village and into the Salmon Falls, and half this town is out the door before six, headed for the bridges over to New Hampshire. Hussey Excavation Inc makes that possible in winter: plowing driveways and lots through the storm and again behind it, cutting out the plow berm the town leaves at the foot of every drive, sanding the entrances where a car has to climb to reach the road. Snow that falls as rain on the coast comes down heavy up here, and the second pass is what separates a cleared driveway from a rutted one. There is real pride in the moment a truck pulls off at six and everything behind it sits open, dark and square. The commute never has to know how it happened.
