In January the gorge below the falls goes half shut with ice and the Kennebec keeps roaring underneath it, a sound that carries up through the middle of Skowhegan all winter. HP Fairfield works to that soundtrack — plowing driveways, lots and access roads, opening the tight turns near the bridges, hauling snow out once the banks have grown taller than a mirror. Sand and salt go down on the pitches that sit in the shadow of the river bluff. The town does not slow for weather; it only wants the way open by the time the first shift starts. Opening it, storm after storm, is the plain arithmetic of a Skowhegan winter.
