Messalonskee carries an older name here — Snow Pond — and on a January daybreak it earns it, a flat white plain running the length of the town under a pink sky. Snow Pond Designs works the hours on either side of that light: plowing driveways and camp lanes, shoveling walks and steps, spreading sand where the lake wind polishes a slope to glass. The lake makes its own weather, and a squall off it can lay down three inches while you are finishing the far end of a driveway, which is why the second pass counts as much as the first. The finish is what matters — banks cut back to the pavement's edge, the walk bare to the boards, everything ready before the house is awake. Winter in Sidney rewards whoever rises earliest.
