Cold finds the Mousam River channel before it finds the rest of Sanford, and the mill brick along the water holds onto it well past sunrise. Craig's Plowing runs the winter side of that arrangement, pushing driveways and lots open so the first car of the morning meets bare pavement instead of a wall. Once the ice lets go of the old canals, the same routes green up and the work turns to mowing, week after week, keeping yards even from the first cut of May to the last of October. It is plain work in a plain-spoken town, done by someone who knows which corners drift and which lawns dry out first. Sanford, Springvale and the York County towns nearby get both halves of the year from the same hands.
