The brick mills on Factory Island hold the falls in the middle of town, and on a January morning the river steams while Main Street is still dark. O's Maine works those early hours through the winter — snow plowing, driveways and lots cleared, walkways and entries shoveled, sand and salt where the freeze bites hardest. Downtown Saco means tight dooryards and short drives where finesse beats brute force; out from there the neighborhoods spread wide and open. Either way the standard is bare pavement and banks pushed clear of the sightlines. By the time the shops unlock, it is behind them.
