In January the Androscoggin runs black and steaming under the Rumford falls, and the cold stops being weather and becomes a fact of the place. HDC Construction plows through it — driveways opened, entries cleared, banks pushed back before they narrow a street down to one lane. The hill streets above the river are the real test: steep, tight, and buried by daylight if nobody comes. Getting a truck out of a Rumford dooryard at five in the morning after a foot of wet snow is a small thing that decides somebody's whole day. That's reason enough to be rolling before the sand trucks have finished their first run on Route 2.
