The Kennebec goes past Richmond broad and slow with Swan Island sitting out in the middle of it, and the town's yards run down toward the water in long green terraces. Steele's Landscaping mows and trims those yards through the warm months — steady cuts, clean edges along the walks off Front Street, cleanups that clear the winter sand in April and the leaves in October. When the river starts steaming in December the equipment changes over, and the same driveways get plowed and the same walkways shoveled before the sun is up. Working both ends of the year means knowing a property twice: where the drain sits in June, where the bank can go in January. Richmond and the towns nearby, all twelve months of it.
