The Aroostook River cuts straight through the middle of Presque Isle, brown with runoff in April, locked and silent by January, and the town keeps its calendar by it. Caron's Lawn & Property Maintenance works both ends of that year: mowing, trimming and cleanups while the river is open, plowing, shoveling and sanding once it is not. Summer daylight this far north stretches nearly to nine, which is time enough to finish a route properly instead of quickly. Winter takes all of it back, and then the job is a cleared drive at five in the morning with the thermometer well under zero. Same properties, twelve months around, tended straight through.
